چکیده

Here, we present a hierarchical form of multiscale modeling to understand fundamental issues ofdeformation in Ti. This report presents our effort in the following areas,1. Effects of oxygen on prismatic faults in -Ti: A combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanicsstudy2. Nano-indentation and slip transfer (critical in understanding crack initiation)3. An extended-finite element framework (XFEM) to study SCG mechanisms4. Atomistic methods to develop a grain and twin boundaries database in -Ti to quantify and developa. a crack initiation model,b. the necessary cohesive zone models for interfaces and single crystals, andc. a crystal plasticity modelFundamental to the development of a hierarchical atomistic-continuum methodology for SCG is thedevelopment of appropriate crack initiation models, cohesive zone properties, crystal plasticity models, andthe microstructure based finite element framework, i.e., in this case, we are using an XFEM. Overall, weDISTRIBUTION A: Distribution approved for public release. have generalized XFEM to include implicit representation of grains and grain boundaries. The newformulation can incorporate microstructure features directly based on EBSD data using level setformulations. Furthermore, an atomistic database of interactions of dislocation-impurities was developed.Using the developed database an appropriate crystal plasticity model was developed to investigate SCG inTi alloys.Distribution StatementThis is block 12 on the SF298 form. Probability Approach for Prediction of Pitting Corrosion Fatigue Life of Custom 450 Steel

In this study, the pitting type of corrosion growth characteristics, fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior; axial fatigue tests were carried out on precipitation hardened martensitic Custom 450 steel in the air and 3.5wt% NaCl solution. Using the ratio of the depth to the half-width of the pits; (a/c)= 1.5±0.2 the corrosion pit depth growth law was obtained as a function of stress a...

Fatigue and Fracture Behavior of a Cold-Drawn Commercially Pure Aluminum Wire

Fatigue properties and cracking behavior of cold-drawn commercially pure aluminum wires (CPAWs) widely used as the overhead transmission conductors were investigated. It was found that the fracture surface of the CPAWs shows an obvious four-stage fracture characteristic, i.e., crack initiation, planar crack propagation, 45°-inclined crack propagation and final rapid fracture. The crack growth m...

Effects of Microstructure on Room Temperature Fatigue Crack Initiation and Short Crack Propagation in Udimet

An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation in a Ni-base superalloy is presented. The assessment was carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, including as-received U720Li, U720Li-LG (large grain variant) and U720Li-LP (large intragranular coherent γ′ variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature...

Effect of Boundary Condition on Pre-Existing Crack Under Fatigue Loading

In this paper, the present investigation has been conducted keeping in mind some of the problems concerning the crack propagation direction and growth under constant loading in an inclined crack geometry. The present studies mainly focused on the development and modifications in the crack growth criterion to account the biaxial, shear loading and number of stress terms. Existing criteria for th...
